Safety Message

Safety Starts with Me

Pei Hwa Secondary School believes in providing a safe and healthy environment for achieving our School Motto of Nurturing Talents. We aim to:

• make Pei Hwa Secondary School a safe and secure place for teaching and learning
• educate staff and pupils on the personal responsibility for health and safety
• identify and manage hazards before they become health and safety problems
• identify and minimize risks in the conduct of activities
• promote continuous improvement and learning on health and safety in school

Committee

Under the leadership of the School Leaders, the School Safety & Emergency Committee is formed to ensure a safe work environment for teaching and learning.

The Committee is headed by the Chief Safety Officer (Vice-Principal) to cover 6 main areas of safety:

• Safety in School Building and Environment
• Safety in Special Rooms such as Science Laboratories, Workshops, Cookery Rooms and Computer Laboratories
• Safety in the conduct of PE, CCA, Sports and Outdoor Adventure activities
• Road and Health Safety
• Capacity building in staff and pupils
• Education on Safety

General Information

Safety Policies & Guidelines

These written documents are readily accessible through school shared folders and are communicated to all students at the beginning of each year.

General Safety Rules & Precautions

Conducting Pre-activity Safety Briefing for all activities:

1. Special Rooms such as, Gym, D&T Workshops, Science Laboratories, Cookery Rooms etc.
2. PE & CCA (including tournaments and competition in school or out of school)
3. Camps
4. Water activities
5. Local excursion
6. Inclement weather (Lightning, Rain and Haze)
7. Outbreak of Communicable Diseases
8. Heat related injuries (MOE block-out time: 11am to 3pm)

Checking of medical condition / history – basing on the records of annual health screening as well as the declaration of pre-existing health condition of pupils. Allow students to opt out if they are unwell.

Risk Assessment Management System (RAMS) is conducted for any activity by a team of people involved, which includes teachers / local vendors / instructors / trainers who have the adequate knowledge and expertise in ensuring the activities are being carried in a safe manner.

Fire / Emergency / Security Evacuation exercises are conducted to ensure students are familiar with the procedure to undertake in the event of actual emergency.

Trained first aiders are readily available.

Established internal safety audit structure and conducting yearly internal audit.

Road Safety Management

1. Security officers control traffic at the main gate during peak hours.
2. There are adequate traffic signs, road markings and good lighting to ensure the safety of pedestrians in the school compound.
3. For all student cyclists (manual and electric) and PMD users, it is required to register your particulars with your parent’s consent with the General Office.

Road Safety for Parents and Children

Driving in school zones

• slow down and drive more carefully when you are in a school zone.
• Be extra vigilant to watch out for pupils crossing the road as they may be blocked from your view.
• Be patient when you encounter heavy traffic at school zones during peak hours.
• Follow the instructions given by the school security personnel/teacher warden.

In guiding your child

• Set the right example for your child to use the road safely.
• Teach your child to look out for potential safety hazard when crossing the road.
• If you drive your children to school, let them alight at a safe and proper drop-off point. This ensures safety not only for your child but for other school children and road users as well.

Safety Tips for Participation in Sports and Games

As with all physical activities, sporting or otherwise, there is always an inherent element of risk. As such, one should always encure that these risks are minimized before the start of each activity. In many instances, accidents and injuries could be avoided if adheres to safety practices.

Insurance Claim

Student Accident Protection Scheme

With effect from 2022, all student accident insurance claims submission are to be submitted electronically. Parents/students are to submit their claims online and check the claims status through the online portal.

Food Safety in School

Food can be easily contaminated and become unsafe for eating. Food contaimination may occur when cooked food is accidentally mixed with raw meat juices, or when food is exposed to dirt, chemicals, bacteria, viruses or other pathogens. This usually happens because we do not handle our food safely or observe proper hygiene.

Eating contaminated food can cause food poisoning, which can range from mild to severe cases of food poisoning, which could be fatal.  We can help safeguard our personal health by maintaining personal hygiene and practising good habits.
