DSA Admission – Guzheng

The Pei Hwa Guzheng Ensemble seeks to provide opportunities to develop students’ talents and lifelong passion for the arts. Through the meaningful music experiences planned, the Pei Hwa Guzheng Ensemble also endeavours to help students to build character, foster friendships and cultivate a sense of belonging to the school.

Criteria

Applicants should have experience in playing the Guzheng. (Formal Certification is useful, but not compulsory)

Applicants should preferably have:

• represented their primary school Guzheng Ensemble in external events or competitions (eg. Singapore Youth Festival (SYF) Arts presentation for Guzheng ensemble, Singapore Chinese Music Competition, public concerts, etc) OR
• relevant experiences in performing the Guzheng at school and/or external events OR
• other achievement(s)/attainment(s) in Guzheng

Note:

1. Applicants do not need to possess all of the above criteria to be considered
2. Meeting all the criteria does not guarantee the applicant will be shortlisted/given an offer.

Selection Process

Shortlisted applicants will undergo:

• An individual interview with panel of teachers and intructor
• An individual audition requiring shortlisted DSA applicants to:
1. Perform two prepared pieces or movements:
• The two pieces or movements should be contrasting pieces in terms of tempo
• The total duration of both pieces or movements should not be longer than 4 minutes
• Students will be asked to stop playing their prepared pieces at the end of 4 minutes
2. Sight-read and play a simple piece in cipher notation (简谱) provided by Pei Hwa Secondary School on the day of audition.

Note:

1. All Interviews and Auditions will take place face-to-face at Pei Hwa Secondary School.
2. Guzheng will be provided by Pei Hwa Secondary School but shortlisted DSA applicants may bring their own instruments for the audition, if they wish to.
3. Shortlisted DSA applicants need to provide two sets of scores for their prepared pieces at the start of the audition. The scores will be returned at the end of the audition.
