Mother Tongue
Philosophy
“Every Pei Hwa student is equipped with effective linguistic and cultural skills to be a global citizen.”
We hope to cultivate our student’s interest for Mother Tongue Languages so as to enable them to learn and apply the language in their daily lives. Beyond learning the language, we also strive to empower our students with the understanding of Singapore and the world through the culture embedded in our Mother Tongue Languages.
Curriculum
Our curriculum focuses on listening, speaking, reading, writing and interaction skills. Students can progress to different levels of proficiency, depending on their interest and abilities.
We also believe in infusing fun in the learning of languages and has thus gone beyond the conventional pen and paper when it comes to the learning of languages.
Building Reading Skills
We curate reads for our students and encourage students to read through reading competitions.
Game Based Learning
We believe in making learning fun. The teachers add in games and competitive elements into students’ learning conscientiously. Our interesting ways of teaching and learning have been selected to be shared in Teacher Led Workshops and cluster sharings with other schools.
Learning through Making
To enhance the learning and engagement level of our students, we also get students to explore, collaborate and create in the learning of Mother Tongue Languages. Students are given the opportunity to learn the curriculum content through puppetry making, creating vlogs and even making their own bubble tea.
Enrichment
We believe that the learning of languages should not be confined by the boundaries of a classroom. The best learning should come from exposure and application. Thus we also adopt a tiered approach to enhance our students’ learning of Mother Tongue Languages.
Cultural Enrichment
Other than Mother Tongue Fortnight, Pei Hwa students also have additional cultural enrichment classes which range from drama to music appreciation.
Reading Programme
Beyond curated reads which are also tied in to students’ daily learning in class, the school also conducts reading competitions and speaker series to encourage students to read.
External Competitions
Tier 2 and 3 students are trained and given the opportunities to participate in national competitions such as National Theatresports, National Chinese Creative Reading Competition and Chinese Bridge Competition in which our students have received accolades for.
