English and English Literature
Philosophy
“To develop students who are confident and competent communicators through an engaging and empowering English Language and Literature curriculum”
Through English Language and Literature, we endeavour to inculcate in students a love for the English language, and an appreciation of the intricacies of the language to create personalised meaning.
We aim to give students the regular opportunities to formulate their ideas and share their thoughts during discussions and presentations in class effectively and impactfully.
Curriculum
English Language
In a world where English remains the lingua franca, the ability to communicate effectively and impactfully is vital. In line with the English Language Syllabus 2020, our department focuses on developing students to be: Empathetic communicators, Discerning readers, and Creative inquirers.
Language skills (both productive and receptive) are taught with an emphasis on the foundational knowledge of grammar and vocabulary. We use a range of rich multimodal text types and resources to enable students to appreciate language used for a range of purposes, audiences, contexts, and cultures.
Our students take to the stage on during assembly to share their thoughts and viewpoints on our student outcomes, school values and current affairs. These 'slices' of their lives are savoured by the Pei Hwa Family.
Literature in English
In the 21st Century, where people wrestle with the essential questions of what it means to live a meaningful and flourishing life and where globalisation, changing demographics, and technological advancements drive change, the study of Literature matters.
In line with the Literature syllabus 2019, our department focuses on developing students to be: Empathetic and Global Thinkers, Critical Readers, Creative Meaning-makers, and Convincing Communicators.
Our students study three genres: Poetry, Prose, and Drama across Secondary 1 to 2. The genres encourage students to read widely and deeply, and to respond through dialogue and writing. A Literature classroom is one where rich dialogue happens through meaningful facilitation of the reading process. Students will get to make connections between the text and their lives, the world, other readers, and other texts.
In Upper Secondary, students go into greater depth and study a designated set novel and drama, together with rich local and global poetry.
Enrichment
Our signature enrichment programme which supports our students’ oracy development is the:
