We are grateful for the past efforts of the two previous Principals and staff in building a strong foundation for the school. Despite being a relatively young school that is entering into its 12th year now, it is heartening to learn that the school has established a reputation for being a school with good discipline within the community it is located. The compliments we receive from the community when our students demonstrate the school’s PRIDE values are a testimony that we are on the right track in developing students with altruism.
Our desired outcomes of every Pei Hwaian being a Leader, a Scholar, an Altruist (LSA) sets them up to embrace the challenges of the 21st century and to realise our vision of being the ‘Pride of the Community’. This year will be the first year we will be giving out certificates to the graduating students who have met and exceeded our LSA outcomes. In Pei Hwa Secondary School (PHSS), we believe that every student who enters the school is a unique individual. The school provides a caring and conducive environment with access to different opportunities to nurture each of them holistically.
The Experiential Education (EE) approach in teaching and learning will continue to feature strongly in our formal curriculum as we continue to explore ways to make learning authentic, relevant and meaningful, both within and out of the classroom. Academic results while important are not the only thing that will determine a person’s success.
Character development plays an equally important part, if not more, in ensuring that our students are self-disciplined individuals and will internalise the school’s PRIDE values by the time they leave us.
Our Learning for Life Programme (LLP) in the area of ‘Community Youth Leadership’ continues to grow the spirit of community leadership and altruism in our students so that it instills in them a sense of rootedness and responsibility for their community and fellow Singaporeans.
In 2015, we trained all of our Secondary 1 students in Robotics and Programming – our Applied Learning Programme (ALP) – and they will apply what they have learnt when they do their Project Work in Secondary 2. Moving forward, the work to enhance both our LLP and ALP will continue so that we can help students to appreciate the relevance and value of what they are learning in the academic curriculum and develop stronger motivation and purpose to acquire useful knowledge and skills.
As we embark on the next phase of Pei Hwa’s growth, we aspire to nurture our students’ talents so that they will be prepared for the 21st century and can contribute meaningfully to the community. We recognise that we cannot do all these alone. We are blessed in Pei Hwa to have wonderful support from our parents, Alumni, School Advisory Committee, Pei Hwa Foundation and the community. We are confident that the school will continue to lead and grow in our mission to develop responsible and resilient citizens with a passion for learning. We welcome on board new members, new students, and new parents to enjoy the Pei Hwa experience and make it even better.
