The Mother Tongue Department is committed in nurturing Active Learners and Proficient Users, emphasizing on the three broad objectives of Communication, Culture and Connection, so as to support and enable every student to learn MTL to as high a level as each student is able to.
Besides banding and differentiated instruction, we have the Mother Tongue rreading programme, ICT home-based learning, levelling programmes such as ACER and Mother Tongue Intensive. Other enrichment activities are as follows:
Festive Celebrations – Lunar New Year, Hari Raya and Mid-Autumn Celebrations
During the different festive celebrations, students have chances to showcase their performing talents in Dikir Barat, Wu Shu and Chinese traditional music / dance. In addition, out twinning partners from Indonesia and China also join in.
Culture Introductory Programme and Mother Tongue Fortnight
For the Malay Language Unit, Batik Painting, Drama Appreciation and Poem & Song workshops are conducted to enhance students’ appreciation of the Malay culture. For the Chinese Language Unit, students participate actively in Tea Appreciation Course, Singing Competition, Culture and History Quiz as well as the Language Treasure Hunt during Mother Tongue Fortnight, cultivating their interests in Chinese culture and honing their communication skills in the process.
Cultural Performance Exposure Scheme (CPES)
Students are exposed to Chinese Language related cultural performances and programmes by local and foreign bodies. The performances include 《我爱阿爱》”I Love Ah Ai”, 学生剧场戏剧小品系列 –《成长 3》 Youth Drama Skit Performance Series – “Grow Up 3”, 《你们真坏蛋》 “Transformation of Mischievous Bunch to Heroes” and 《同学们，相声来了！》－ 陈伟德作品专场 “To Youth, with Laughs”.
Conversational Chinese / Malay Language Programme
This programme is offered to all Sec 1 and Sec 2 pupils. The initiative is in line with MOE’s objective to strengthen Singapore‘s multiracial society as part of effort to promote National Education and to enable Singaporeans to have some grounding in functional Chinese Language/Malay Language so that they can easily pick up the language in adult life. 10 lessons of 2 hours each are conducted.
